Montessori Community School is home to students, ages 18 months to 14 years. Our campus is set on 14 acres of natural landscape that lends itself to a Montessori environment. Located on the border between Durham and Chapel Hill, we offer children in toddler to our adolescent program wonderful indoor and outdoor spaces where they can work, play, discover, and learn.
We have a highly dedicated and trained faculty that guide each child’s progress through the curriculum. We educate children according to Dr. Maria Montessori’s highest values of community, love of learning, perseverance, and education as an aid to life. We also prepare students for success in the local secondary schools.
MCS has a strong community of teachers, staff, students, and parents, all working in concert to the best outcome for our children. It is a place where parents are active partners in their children’s education. We have a very active parent/teacher organization (the PTO), a strong, forward-thinking board, and an outstanding team of administrators responsible for each of the programs – toddler/primary, elementary, and adolescent.
We have a robust academic program that promotes independent learning with an emphasis on building concepts, problem-solving, and mastery of skills. Our specials include physical education, Spanish, music, ceramics, and art for all students from kindergarten to 8th grade and Spanish and music for our primary students. A variety of clubs, sports, and classes are available after school.
Our campus includes four primary (pre-K and kindergarten) classes and a toddler class. Each classroom has its own outdoor garden and shared natural learning area. The three lower elementary classes (grades 1-3) are housed in our 300 building adjacent to the elementary playground; each has beautiful bright open spaces and its own bathrooms, cubbies, and kitchen. Our two upper elementary classes (grades 4-6) and our adolescent program (grades 7 and 8) enjoy our newest classroom spaces in the 600 building. This building has a computer/technology space and a full kitchen, along with ample library space within the classrooms.
The centerpiece of the campus is the beautiful fine arts building, The Spark Center, which houses our music and art programs. Finally, the children enjoy outdoor learning and play all over campus with three playgrounds, outdoor learning centers, a sport field, sand volleyball court, track, basketball and four square courts, plus a wonderful wooded area.
Our outdoor wetland habitats improve water quality using green principles, nurture biodiversity (introducing novel and sustainable flora and fauna to the MCS campus), and address community concerns for storm water run-off by increasing our capacity to retain rainwater on site. The wetland areas provide students with accessible living laboratories for the study of ecology, biology, chemistry, and other related sciences.
Maria Montessori believed that young children should study the similarities and differences between communities around the globe, to build an early and growing awareness of our diverse, interconnected world.
Our Montessori school strives to be an intentionally diverse community, comprised of people of different ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, gender identities, family structures, sexual orientations, racial identities, national origins, religions, and abilities.
We celebrate the ways that our uniqueness and differences enable us to enrich each other’s lives. We actively seek to create an atmosphere of respect and openness, in which every person is recognized and supported.
In accordance with the MCS Strategic Plan, we continue to work to strengthen diversity and inclusiveness in our community. MCS strives to provide a culturally competent curriculum in the context of the Montessori philosophy’s commitment to social justice and peace. Our work is supported by the MCS Administration and by the Diversity Committee, which is made up of dedicated group of parents, faculty, and members of the Board of Trustees.
