The toddler program serves children between the ages of 18 months to three years in a classroom that is both spacious and inviting. The classroom gives children the ability to move freely and pass from one activity to another which is part of their nature. The toddlers have one certified Montessori teacher and two assistants. The classroom will have a 6:1 ratio, or better, at all times. The half-day program attends school five days a week from 8:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. The full-day program attends school five days a week from 8:15 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The full-day program also has the option of early care from 7:30 a.m. - 8:15 a.m. and late day care from 3:00 p.m. - 5:45 p.m.
The schedule includes time for individual work with language enrichment materials, hand-eye coordination materials, art materials, and practical life materials (such as plant watering, mopping, and table washing). The bright and airy classroom provides many open spaces for the children to move and explore.
The class also has group time for singing, reading, music, and movement. Children spend time outside each day, weather permitting, and they have a morning snack. Toddlers have in-class Spanish instruction once a week. Full-day toddlers will have nap/rest time in the afternoon.
During the first two weeks of school, Toddlers experience a unique orientation period during which the number of children and the length of time spent at school gradually increases. By the end of the third week, all of the children are ready to come to school for the full three hours.
This orientation period gives children the opportunity to adjust to the routine and newness of school in a calm, peaceful, and secure setting. Most toddlers are not yet toilet-trained when they begin the program.
