Campaign
to Complete the Community
The Montessori Community School has a wonderful history of great
generosity from its parents and friends. This generosity has enabled
MCS in recent years to grow and build new facilities.
The Campaign to Complete the Community was Montessori Community
School's $4 million expansion project. The Campaign has already resulted in a 'green' built Adolescent Program
and Upper Elementary building, a Multipurpose Gymnasium and elementary
late day room, wetlands, natural habitats, enlarged sports fields,
as well as associated furniture and equipment and the acquisition
of 4 acre property adjoining the school. The new Fine Arts building
includes an art studio, music studio, teachers' workroom,
storage, foyer and elaborate transitional spaces opening
to the outdoors.
Indoor facilities have been designed to underscore each child's
connection to the natural world, provide an aesthetically pleasing
space in which to live and work, integrate energy conservation strategies,
be cost effective to operate, use durable, nontoxic materials, provide
the highest quality direct and indirect natural light, capture rainwater
from rooftop surfaces to drip irrigate athletic fields and flush
toilets.
Outdoor constructed wetland habitats improve water quality
using green principles, nurture biodiversity (introducing novel
and sustainable flora and fauna to the MCS campus), and address community
concerns for storm water runoff by increasing our capacity to retain
rainwater on site by 200 to 300 percent. The wetlands will provide students
with accessible living wetland laboratories for the study of ecology,
biology, chemistry and other related sciences. |
The Campus Master Plan
Having collected opinions from the community last
year, the Campus Master Plan Committee of the Board prepared
a draft Campus Concept Plan, working with Josh Gurlitz and the local firm of GGA Associats, endorsed by the Board and presented to the community in May, 2009. View the Campus Master Concept Plan. The committee is currently formulating a landscaping plan working with nationally known landscape architect Robin Moore at NC State University.
MCS Strategic Planning
Having collected opinions from the community two years ago, the Strategic Planning Committee of the Board prepared
a final draft Strategic Plan passed by the Board of Trustees in December, 2008. View the Strategic Plan.
MCS Annual Fund
The Annual Fund at MCS offers parents a tax-deductible opportunity
to contribute to school operational costs, thereby reducing tuition
increases and providing exceptional experiences, like the Opera
and visiting artists. The Annual Fund goal is part of the Operating
Budget each year, as approved by the Board of Trustees. The response
to and success of the Annual Fund continues to be invigorating for
all the school. Every gift to the Annual Fund enriches the student
body's experience at MCS.
Montessori Community Association
The Montessori Community Association (MCA) is the parent/teacher
organization at Montessori Community School. The MCA provides a
wide variety of community building and service efforts to improve
the overall experience of families who are a part of our school
community. Part of its efforts are small fundraising projects which
enable the MCA to select "extra" items or programs to
enhance the MCS experience; in past year, such "extras"
included outdoor umbrellas, picnic tables, landscaping, music risers,
Fast ForWord computer license, ice cream socials and the school's
activity bus.
