Performing Arts are an exciting part of student life at MCS. From the time students enter Primary as 3 year olds, they engage in song and dance in the classroom. They perform with their class or as a group (combining with other classes) at assemblies throughout the year. Whether singing our school song “Planting the Seeds of Peace” or dancing the Virginia Reel, our smallest performers are always a hit with parents, faculty, and older students who come to watch.
In Elementary, students also perform in assemblies, singing and dancing as well as showcasing instruments they have learned. Students in the 4th through 6th grades perform in choir concerts, while our 1st through 3rd graders share their songs in all-school assemblies. They also have the opportunity to perform at special events on campus.
A traditional part of the Elementary program is the annual opera which takes place in the spring each year. Students work with our music and dance teachers to prepare for the opera. MCS enlists Youth Opera International to polish the performance the week before the opera. Known as “Opera Week,” this is a time when students come together in practice and support for one another in anticipation of opening night. Our Middle School students also join the effort by providing set design, make-up, and costume support.
The Jazz club also offers an opportunity for aspiring dancers. Practicing once a week throughout the year, this group performs two outstanding shows in our gym for the MCS community to enjoy.
Middle School students put on one major performance each year after Winter break. This year, they performed “Into the Woods. Jr.” a Stephen Sondheim musical. Past performances have included “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “The Tempest,” “Macbeth,” and “Memoriam.”
