Director of Advancement
Montessori Community School (MCS) is an independent Montessori school located on the border of Chapel Hill and Durham, North Carolina and is accredited by the American Montessori Society (AMS). We are seeking an experienced Director of Advancement to capitalize on the growing excitement in our school community and help build connections with the past, present and future of MCS. The school is expecting to launch a capital campaign in the next 1-2 years in support of the strategic plan.
The Director of Advancement will be a part of the Senior Leadership Team of the school alongside the Director of Academics, Director of Finance and Operations and Head of School.
Major Responsibilities
The Director of Advancement will:
- Manage members of the advancement team, including the Director of Community Engagement, the Director of Communications, and the Strategic Plan Coordinator
- Establish and execute forward-thinking development/advancement and strategic programs that optimally grow and develop annual, major, and capital campaigns; legacy gifts; and planned giving
- Oversee and execute all aspects of the development program, including fundraising, leading the annual giving program (MCS Fund), guiding capital/comprehensive campaign efforts and soliciting corporate and foundation proposals
- Identify, research, and spearhead the implementation of a diverse and multifaceted fundraising program to support the school’s strategic vision, cultivating a culture of giving and gratitude across all constituencies and socio-economic strata
- In partnership with the Director of Community Engagement, strengthen relationships with the school’s alumni and further develop alumni programming
- Spearhead special development and alumni events
- Identify corporate and foundation funding opportunities and help draft grant applications
- Personally solicit major donors and build foundational relationships to support the head of school in connecting with these donors
- Enhance existing relationships while building new relationships, systems, and programs that further tap into the generosity and resources of the community
- Maintain a database of all contributors and provide development reports as required, including processing of all gift income for the purpose of providing receipts and the maintaining of giving records of donors to the school in conjunction with the business office.
- Manage the development budget
- Collaborate with the admissions office on PR initiatives and the marketing and communications office to create/produce fundraising-related communication materials to expand and enhance the school’s visibility and reputation.
- Nurture and maintain a highly collaborative relationship with the head of school, the board chair, Development Committee members, and individual board members, supporting them in all their fundraising efforts and accompanying them on donor visits when appropriate
Qualification Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher
- Experience in the nonprofit sector and in fundraising, with independent school experience preferred
- Proven success in directly soliciting and closing charitable gifts, with direct experience leading capital and comprehensive campaigns preferred
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with all the school’s constituents while maintaining strict confidentiality
- Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills
- Strategic thinker with a “can-do” style
- Passionate about working with a wide range of individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Outstanding knowledge of fundraising data software and database management software
- Expertise working with and motivating volunteers and staff members

Primary Assistant Teacher

Job requirements
- Montessori Certified for Elementary I (6-9) or Elementary I and II (9-12) from a MACTE accredited program

Late Day Staff
We are seeking a part-time staff member to supervise children in our After School program. Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years of age, have a warm and friendly personality, be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others, be able to relate well to children, and be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the School’s program and philosophy. The ideal applicant will enjoy spending time outdoors in varying weather conditions and be able to facilitate programs with fellow staff members in a collaborative setting. Hours are 2:45 - 6:00 p.m. Monday - Friday, though these may be adjusted at the time of an employment offer depending on the needs of the program.

Substitute Teacher
We are looking for caring, flexible substitute teachers to add to our on-call list. Substitute teachers must be willing to work with children from ages 18 months through 8th grade. No formal Montessori training is needed to apply, though, former teaching/childcare experience is preferred. This is an on-call position where we will reach out to you as needed to provide coverage when our current staff is absent. Hours for the position and days worked vary based on the needs of the school. Interested applicants should send a resume and list of at least four references. All Substitute Teachers will be required to complete a background screening and provide proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test that is within the week of substituting.
